This is my third book in the Health Restoration series. If you missed the first two, they are 13 Secrets to Optimal Health: How Your Hormones Can Help You Achieve a Better Quality of Life and Longevity and Micronutrient Testing: How to Find What Vitamins, Minerals, and Antioxidants You Need. Each book in the series compliments each other and gives additional information about the nine variables to good health—genetic variants, environmental toxins, trauma, what we eat, what we drink, how we exercise, how we rest, how/what we breathe, and what we think. What we think is the most important because it determines our choices, lifestyle, and behavior. The purpose of this book is to increase your awareness about potential causes of your illness (a chronic dysfunction like fatigue or lack of energy without any named source)/disease (named condition) from environmental toxins so you can make better decisions concerning your health and well-being. This potential causation for less than optimal health may not even be on your or your doctors’ radar. If you don’t know what the environmental causes of disease are, you cannot test for it or correct it.
This book, like the previous two, discusses signs, symptoms, illnesses, and diseases that can be verified by specific testing and corrected by changes in lifestyle and specific supplementation. If you are reading this, you are open to the possibility that environmental toxicity may be the cause or contributing factor of your health problems or those of a close friend or relative. This is the correct perception to have. It is not a question of whether or not you have environmental toxins in your body: You do. It is a matter of how many toxins there are and the quantity of each. I have never had a patient who was evaluated that did not have significant levels of several different dangerous chemicals in their bodies. Many of you may be wondering how many environmental toxins are in your body. It is probably much more than you have imagined. Although there are studies that involve the effects of a single environmental pollutant, I have not found any that study the cumulative effects of multiple toxins. However, I think it is logical to assume that having high levels of several environmental toxins is more dangerous than having a single toxin. At the end of the book, there are case histories that will give you an idea of what kind of conditions exposure to these toxins can cause, how their presence is demonstrated and the amount of each (body burden), and how to reduce and eliminate these from the body.

This book was scheduled to be the last of the 7 book series but there were too many cutting edge technologies emerging to help so many people that we moved it up. Each book discusses the 9 variables of our health and longevity – genetic variants, environmental toxins, trauma, what we eat, what we drink, how we rest, how we exercise, how/what we breathe, and what we think determine our quality of life and our functional longevity. You will learn that Alzheimer’s is no different than many chronic diseases in today’s world. Dementai and Alzheimer’s are the result of multiple hormonal and nutritional deficiencies, oxidative stress, and an unfriendly environment that is poisoning the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat, and for some – bad genes.
Alzheimer’s in nothing more than an ugly expression of the negative stress of the 9 variables in our health and longevity. Unfortunately, those with Alzheimer’s have problems in several of these variables. The many commonalities that Alzheimer’s exhibits with diabetes II and cardiovascular disease and oxidative stress will be brought forth as well as its link to the APOE4 gene variant. Overwelming scientific evidence will be presented that Alzheimer’s is the end result of poor lifestyle choices coupled with a sick environment and in many cases bad genetic variances. The good news is that is that the causes of these conditions can be detected, monitored, and negated.
Alzheimer’s is denoted by the presence of abeta and Tau proteins throughout the brain. Abeta formation is a natural process. It is the increased production coupled with the inability to rid the brain of it that causes the damage. There are multiple causes for this occurrence and each will be discussed. Because there are multiple causes of the production of abeta and inability to dispose of it, no single drug has been, or will be, ever found that addresses all these issues. Research demonstrates that these problems can be prevented and even reversed if there is enough time. The individual with Alzheimer’s has multiple hormone, nutritional, and neurotransmitter deficiencies. The Alzheimer’s patient has a heavy body burden of environmental toxins. The Alzheimer patient has mitochondria energy production deficits. The Alzheimer patient has free radical damage in the brain. Many Alzheimer’s patients have suffered a brain trauma in the past. Approximately half of those diagnosed with Alzheimer’s possess the APOE4 gene variant. The APOE4 gene variant, like the majority of the gene variants, is actionable, meaning that an individual can take actions steps to compensate for it.
The good news is that the research shows that prevention and reversal are possible when caught early enough. However, massive action must take place once dementia/Alzheimer’s is suspected. Prevention and earlier detection are the keys to success. By taking specific steps outlined in this book one can markedly reduce their risks of succumbing to this degenerative disease. For example, having healthy thyroid function can reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s by 50%. Having optimum omega 6/omega 3 ratios and omega 3 levels in the cells can reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s by 49%. This book will cover how specific hormones and nutrients can prevent, arrest, and reverse abeta levels and plaquing. It is the synergistic combination of these that is essential. This book will uncover the many invisible environmental toxins that are contributing to this pathology and how to stop the poisoning and get rid of the toxins. This is a lengthy book because there is not one single causation for Alzheimer’s and, subsequently there will never be one magic pill that prevents or reverses it. Some of the information is quite technical in a couple of chapters like the formation of abeta and its transportation from the brain. In these instances, I give an introductory paragraph and summary paragraph so the reader can get the main points. The inclusion of this more technical information is for those health care professionals or other individuals that like that type of detail. However, the vast majority of the book is readily understood by the layperson.
Dementia and Alzheimer’s are the result of doing more bad than good for your brain. What is bad for the brain is bad for the body and what is bad for the body is bad for the brain. Many times the individual is not aware of the potential danger their decision-making has to their brain health. These potential dangers are ever-increasing due to the pollution of our air, water, and food sources. This is a different world we live in today compared to 100 years ago. There are many potential hazards in our everyday life in today’s world that did not exist in the past that contribute to the increased development of Alzheimer’s. This book will point out these hazards to you and give you a game plan to avoid or resolve them.

Micronutrient Testing Introduction
Data in this book is organized by health problems, which are presented alphabetically. Micronutrient testing is a wonderful test— one I frequently recommend—and should be considered as a primary component of any preventative, wellness, or therapeutic treatment program. This test allows the clinician and patient to be snipers in locating nutritional deficiencies instead of using a shotgun approach to nutritional supplementation.
The mineral content of our soil has been depleted by about eighty percent from the days of my great-grandparents and grandparents. The vitamin content of foods is dependent upon the mineral content in the food. Low mineral content in the soil equates to low mineral content in the fruits, vegetables, and grains and, therefore, low vitamin content as well. Even those individuals who eat only organic foods will have vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Because of what we have done to our soil, water, and air supply and the amount of toxic chemicals in the environment, nutraceutical supplementation is a must for optimum health. Even though the nutrient levels are lower in our fruits and vegetables than they used to be, it is essential to eat these foods on a daily basis. They are still far superior to any processed and packaged food. The sad truth is that even with our growing knowledge of the importance of good nutrition more Americans will go to bed tonight without having had a single serving of a fruit or vegetable.
One of the many challenges facing the clinician and the patient is determining what nutrients—vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fatty acids—that an individual needs. It is evident that we need to eat real, wholesome foods instead of packaged foods as much as possible. Generally speaking, most Americans eat too high a percentage of carbohydrates, particularly of the refined category. Certainly, as a general rule, most Americans do not eat enough vegetables. Most Americans are also lacking in good quality fatty acid intake coming from foods like avocadoes, nuts, seeds, olive oil, grass-fed beef, and ocean fish of the non-farm raised variety. Even with an optimum diet, which few of us have, nutritional deficiencies often occur due to the poor mineral content in the soil, which equates to lower vitamin, mineral, and antioxidant content in the foods, genetic variants that create a greater need for a particular nutrient, such as with the MTHFR (Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase) gene variant and folate, and a high body burden of environmental toxins, such as mercury, lead, PCBs, PBAs, glyphosates (Roundup), and the like. Gene variants and environmental toxins create a greater need for specific micronutrients.
I want to re-emphasize the fact that the mineral content of our soil in North America is only about one-seventh of what it was just 100 years ago according to the World Health Organization in 2010. Accordingly, the micronutrient content of our foods is only one-seventh of what it was 100 years ago. Therefore, nutritional supplementation is a must as our requirements are way beyond what a synthetic one-a-day vitamin can provide. Most people have multiple nutrient deficiencies that are not met by this supplement. As much as possible, supplementation should come from whole food sources. There is a vast difference between ascorbic acid and a natural vitamin C complex that also contains minerals and amino acids as well. There is also a difference between a natural vitamin and a synthetic vitamin. Naturally occurring vitamins are molecularly structured in what is known as a cis formation, while synthetic vitamins are in a trans formation. The body, in particular the cell membrane, is designed to recognize and accept the cis formation, not the trans. As to be expected, the trans formation, synthetic vitamins are absorbed less efficiently. You want to put methylated B vitamins in your body from food sources, not synthetic B vitamins made from coal tar.
Micronutrients—vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants, and fatty acids—are essential for proper enzyme function. Enzymes are bio-electric substances that transform one substance into another, taking away and/or adding molecules in the process. These enzymes are responsible for the transformation of one hormone into another as well as the breakdown and disposal of excess hormone in the blood. This process was discussed in 13 Secrets to Optimal Aging, the first book in the Health Restoration series.
Micronutrients are also critical in supporting specific tissues. For example, all of the cells in the body need iodine, but the thyroid, breasts, uterus, and prostate require much more than other cells. Embryologically speaking, the uterus in the woman and the prostate in the man come from the same tissue. When there is an iodine deficiency, these tissues suffer dysfunction, often noted by nodules, cysts, thickening, swelling, and the like. When there is a deficiency, the greater the need a tissue has for a particular nutrient the greater the amount of dysfunction. This is similar to the principle discussed in 13 Secrets to Optimal Aging. The greater the number of receptor sites in a tissue or organ there are for a specific hormone the greater the need and dysfunction when there is a deficiency. The heart has more testosterone receptors in the body than anywhere else other than the testicles. Therefore, when testosterone drops dramatically, the heart is at increased risk for dysfunction, and a heart attack.
Micronutrients are essential to the mitochondrial energy chain. The mitochondria of the cells is what turns the fatty acids from fats and the glucose from protein and carbohydrates in the food we eat into cellular energy. The making of this cellular energy is dependent upon multiple co-factors and numerous enzymatic transformations. Carnitine, an amino acid derivative, is a limiting factor in allowing fatty acids into the mitochondrial energy chain.
Vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, and lipoic acid are the limiting factors for allowing glucose into the mitochondrial energy chain. (See chart below.) Once the respective fuels, fatty acids or glucose, enter the mitochondria there are multiple vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that are necessary to make the conversion into ATP (adenosine triphosphate). Some of these micronutrients are magnesium, manganese, iron, B6, B12, and coenzymeQ10.
Mitochondrial energy is necessary for proper liver function to help detoxify the many chemicals in the air, water, and food and is necessary for ongoing cellular repair and maintenance. It is also necessary for clearing metabolic waste from the brain. Without adequate micronutrients, cell membranes, which consist of about 80% fat, cannot function properly. Adequate fatty acid intake is critical for optimal brain function. Cell membranes are responsible for taking in nutrients to make energy, maintenance and repair as well as disposing of cellular waste, taking in the good and getting rid of the bad. For example, glutamate, a primary stimulatory neurotransmitter, is dependent upon calcium and zinc to be adequate levels to be absorbed into the neuron. In essence, it has a triple lock system: one for the calcium, one for the zinc, and one for the glutamate. This is discussed in more detail in the book Saving Out Brains: Causes, Prevention, and Treatment for Dementia and Alzheimer’s, which will be released soon in the Health Restoration series.
There are other reasons nutritional deficiencies can occur in addition to inadequate intake of proper food. A functional deficiency can occur when a nutrient is present, but it may not be properly activated, not be appropriately localized into the cell, or not have sufficient co-factors to function at a normal level of activity.
Underlying reasons for a functional nutritional deficiency include malabsorption from the gastrointestinal tract, lack of transportation to the appropriate tissue, inability to pass through the cell membrane, lack of intracellular activation storage, or a lack of concentration or activity of essential co-factors. Eating a food or swallowing a pill does not ensure that cells can use those nutrients. The nutrient must pass through the stomach, be absorbed by the small intestine, pass through the liver, be taken by the blood to the cells in the body, and then must pass through the cell membrane where other nutrients are needed as part of the recipe. To circumvent this process, I recommend sublingual and transdermal products that have liposome technology. Liposome technology encloses the nutrient or hormone with phosphatidylcholine, a naturally occurring fat found in the cell membrane. The cell membranes allow the liposome carrying the nutrient through more readily. Another good choice for taking nutraceuticals is isotonic preparations, which also allow for increased absorption.
By design, this used to be a somewhat simple process for an individual as long as s/he ate a variety of colorful and wholesome food. However, because of the amount of processed foods containing trans-fats, high fructose corn syrup, MSG, aspartame, and tens if not hundreds of other chemicals that the average person consumes on a daily basis, obtaining necessary nutrients is significantly more challenging these days. The more man-made chemicals we ingest the more nutrients we need to detoxify our bodies. This detoxification is in addition to the normal fuel a person needs every day for cellular energy to maintain, repair, and replicate his/her body.
Certain tissues contain and need more of a specific nutrient than other tissues. For example, very cell in the body needs iodine. However, the thyroid, breasts, uterus, and prostate contain the majority of this nutrient. When iodine levels are low, these tissues suffer greater dysfunction, causing symptoms that can manifest as nodules or goiter in the thyroid, lumps in the breast, uterine fibroids, or prostate enlargement. Both the uterus and prostate need a great amount of zinc compared to other tissues in the body. Deficiency of zinc can also cause similar symptoms in the prostate and uterus.
Key micronutrients are essential in the process of mitochondria energy production for ongoing cellular repair, maintenance, and duplication as well as the production of the many thousands of essential chemicals that cells make. For example, the parietal cell in the stomach is designed to make and secrete hydrochloric acid that then stimulates pancreatic enzymes and bile to be emptied into the small intestine where absorption takes place. The parietal cells are dependent upon zinc and thiamine, a B vitamin.
Deficiencies of either can cause less hydrochloric acid to be secreted, which in turn causes less pancreatic enzymes and bile to be secreted. The food is not well digested, and more deficiencies occur because the vitamins and minerals are not broken out from the protein in the food.
Many different type of cells in the body are dependent upon the same specific micronutrients. The beta cell in the pancreas produces insulin, which is necessary to transport the sugar (glucose) into the cells to be used for energy. The osteoblast is a new bone cell. The beta cell in the pancreas and the osteoblast in the bone are dependent upon Vitamin D (among many other nutrients) to function properly. If there is not adequate vitamin D available, type II diabetes or osteoporosis can manifest.

Micronutrients affect many functions in the human body
Micronutrients profoundly affect hormonal health. Conversely, hormones profoundly affect nutrient levels. The nutrient hormone interaction is quite intricate, so evaluating one in the context of the other provides a clearer picture of what is going on with each patient. The ways that micronutrients influence hormones are many and varied (See 13 Secrets to Optimal Aging—Book 1 of Health Restoration series.) Micronutrients act on hormone precursors. Vitamin D, which is not a vitamin but actually a hormone, is also a hormone precursor for other steroid hormones.
Micronutrients also catalyze hormone synthesis. Zinc, for example, is a required co-factor in the synthesis of testosterone as well as over 300 other enzymatic functions. Similarly, selenium is required to convert thyroid hormone T4 into the biologically active hormone T3. The intermediary, androstenedione can either convert to testosterone or estrone. Decreased conversion to testosterone is related to deficiencies in Coenzyme Q10, alpha lipoic acid, Vitamin E, and zinc. Co-factor deficiencies directly impact hormone conversion and production.
Micronutrients serve as strict components to hormones. The amino acid, aspartic acid, is a key structural component of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). Micronutrients regulate enzymes that act on hormones. Vitamin C inhibits aromatase, which is an enzyme that converts testosterone to estradiol. Vitamin C has also been shown to increase progesterone. The nutrient/hormone/enzyme relationship is both powerful and intricate.
Micronutrients detoxify dangerous hormone metabolites: Folic acid, B6, B12, as well as minerals like magnesium and antioxidants like glutathione, are needed to convert dangerous estrogen metabolites into benign or even beneficial metabolites. In fact a deficiency of specific micronutrients increases the risk of certain cancers (breast, uterus, ovarian, prostate) by inefficient metabolism of carcinogenic estrogen by-products.
Micronutrients affect neurotransmitters that regulate hormones. A good example of this is the interaction of vitamin B6, prolactin, and dopamine. Vitamin B6 is a co-factor for dopamine, which inhibits prolactin secretion, thus telling the pituitary to increase testosterone. Micronutrients activate genes that regulate hormones. Vitamins, minerals and antioxidants directly affect genetic expression, including genes that regulate hormones. For example, Vitamin A activates the gene that controls the release of thyroid stimulating hormone.
Conversely, hormones alter nutrient levels. Hormones directly impact the function of several nutrients. For example, thyroid hormone stimulates the production of the copper transport protein, ceruloplasmin. Similarly, prolactin stimulates intestinal calcium absorption. The hormonal influence on micronutrients states is complex. For instance, micronutrients are essential to the healthy tissue function of organs. The prostate gland has more zinc than any other tissues in the body. Zinc is essential in the production of HCL in the stomach and in immune response. It is involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body.
Micronutrients, in addition, are essential in the energy production within the mitochondria of the cells. Many of the B vitamins, magnesium, Coenzyme Q10, and L-carnitine are all co- factors involved in this energy production. Deficiencies of any of these micronutrients inhibit energy production, contributing to cellular dysfunction of the liver and inhibiting detoxification processes. The lack of these co-factors also affects the ability of the heart to contract, reducing oxygenated blood throughout the body. I was trained as a conventional family practitioner. When I began practicing what I was taught, I quickly realized something was terribly wrong. I found myself treating my patients with too many drugs that were not treating the underlying cause of their illness and then having to use other drugs to treat the side effects from the first drug used. This book is designed to educate those curious about hormone therapy, how to use hormone therapy safely, and to maximize their results for optimal aging. It is also designed to educate the reader about the hormones in the body, the many functions they perform, and how they work together. In my clinical experience of over 35 years of helping over 15,000 patients, I have found there are four basic concerns middle-aged and elderly people share about the aging process. I hate to even use terms like middle-aged and elderly, as I have just turned age 60, and don’t feel like either of these.
The first concern many people have about aging is that they are afraid they won’t retain their mental faculties. Many of my friends and patients have had to take care of spouses or parents who suffered from dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. They do not want to wind up that way, and there is no reason they should have to. As you will soon learn, many of the hormones that are discussed in this book are involved in the function of memory and recall.
The second concern many people have about aging is that they will lose the ability to ambulate on their own. Loss of mobility in the aging population is caused by several factors including arthritic dysfunctional joints (spine, hips, knees, and feet), strokes or heart attacks, fractures from falls, balance problems, neuropathies, or generalized de-conditioning following an extended hospitalization. The sex hormones are naturally anti-inflammatory, encourage muscle and bone strength and health, and enhance and maintain neurological, cardiovascular, and immune health.
The third concern many people have about aging is a loss of libido or sexual function. Half of divorces of middle-aged couples in the U.S. today are probably related to sexual disinterest or dysfunction. Libido, the desire for sex is natural, and a reflection of a healthy status of an individual. The information in this book will help both men and women have a better understanding why erectile dysfunction occurs in men and why women become disinterested or experience painful sex. The good news for both men and women is that these problems can almost always be resolved without medication and without unpleasant or dangerous side-effects.
The fourth concern many people have as they age is that they will become un-attractive to their spouse or the opposite sex– that no one will find them attractive any more. They worry they will be too fat, too saggy, too wrinkly, or the like. As you will learn, the hormones help maintain muscle tone and mass, bone strength, reduce fat, wrinkles, and moisturize the tissues. Supplementing bio-identical hormones in a balanced manner has a positive effect on your muscles, bones, heart, and your skin, even your face.
There are several important concepts that are presented in this book. One important fact that many are not aware of is that most of the hormones in the body are derived from cholesterol. Most of us have been inappropriately conditioned to think that the lower an individual’s cholesterol is the better. This is just not true. Adequate cholesterol levels are essential to having optimal hormone production. The second fact is that there is vast difference between synthetic hormones and bio-identical hormones, and it is the synthetic hormones, not the bio-identical hormones, that are associated with increased risk for heart attacks, strokes, blood clots, and some cancers, not bio-identical hormones. The third fact is that there are multiple ways to test and administer the hormones. If you are already on a hormone replacement therapy, you might want to re-consider the methodology you are currently using.
The next important concept to understand is that only physiological doses of bio-identical hormones should be used. This means that an individual should not be taking a higher level of hormones than a younger, healthy version of themselves could produce on their own. Dosing of hormones should be individualized, based on the genetic, bio-chemical, and physical attributes of each person. Another important concept to appreciate is that a single hormone deficiency NEVER exists. Because of the complex interrelationship of the endocrine system, and cascading of the sex hormones, having a single hormone deficiency is impossible. Each hormone has both synergistic and antagonistic hormones that are influenced by a deficiency in that hormone.
Another important aspect of understanding sex hormones is that the measurement of the levels of hormones only represents half of the equation in optimal hormone function. The other, equally important aspect of the equation is receptor sensitivity. Even if the hormone level appears optimum– if there is not appropriate receptor sensitivity, the individual will have deficiency symptoms because the hormone is unable to bind to the receptor and, therefore, the cell cannot use the hormone. Actually, the more receptors an organ, or tissues have for a particular hormone the more important that particular hormone is to the function of those tissues or organ. A hormone deficiency/imbalance will produce dysfunction first in those tissues, or organ, having the greatest number of cell receptors. An example of this is the increased risk of one hundred percent for a heart attack in men when their testosterone levels have become reduced by half of what their levels were when they were age 25 because of the tremendous amount of testosterone receptors in the heart. Ultimately, our hormone levels reflect, in many ways, our relative health or health potential. Low levels of hormones are the reflection of the cumulative effects of genetic variances, emotional, mechanical, nutritional, and environmental stressors on the body. The levels are a scorecard on how well an individual is doing in the aging process. Is the individual doing average, above average, or below average?
Supplementing the hormones will help improve body functions immediately and dramatically, but consideration should be made as to what is the cause or what are the causes for this hormone depletion. For example, advertisements ask men do you have low T (testosterone)? The next question– if it is a yes– should be why do you have low testosterone? Is it because of emotional stress, or is it because of insulin and blood sugar dysregulation, for example? While supplementing with testosterone will help, the causes, such as emotional stress, must be eliminated or the insulin/blood sugar dysregulation corrected. Eliminating the cause will result in rising testosterone levels, and need for supplementation will be reduced. A similar approach should be taken in analyzing the most common problem aging women have with low progesterone levels. Consideration should be given as to what is causing the deficiency.

Even though the U.S. prides itself in what an advanced health care system we have, the Brits, the Greeks, and the Japanese have better longevity and with less debilitating disease as they age. For the first time in fifty plus years, predicted longevity rates have decreased for our children. The average American who doesn’t die of a heart attack or metastatic cancer much too often spends their last months or years in a nursing home, in a diaper, unable to ambulate on their own, and unable to recollect the people they love and the events that shaped their lives.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I have studied this topic for years, have worked in the field of health and wellness for over 25 years now, plus have a degree in comprehensive wellness. I have devoured many books on this and similar subjects such as: “Adrenal Fatigue: The 21st-Century Stress Syndrome”, “Sick and Tired of Feeling Sick and Tired: Living with Invisible Chronic Illness”, “Hack Your Depression”, and “Stop The Thyroid Madness”, and many more. I have searched the internet forwards and backwards on endocrine related topics due to the fact that I possess an endocrine related issue of my own. This book is by far one of the best I have ever laid my hands on! It MAY get a little too science geeky for some readers, but I doubt it will be of a concern; given the fact that Dr. Miller explains things so very well. I highly recommend it!
P.S. Keep in mind you can go to many different specialists, or read many different books, and get totally different prospective diagnosis, and protocols for treatment. Dr. Miller’s book looks to be 95% on target. I say only 95% because the endocrine system is only 100% understood by the one whom created it! Its system of “checks and balance” is extremely complex!
